- June 29 – Last day for students – awards assembly
April 28 was Jeans Day at the school. The students bought buttons and hockey cards and managed to raise $520 for the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.
A new voluntary library reading contest began November 1, 2010. It was called Battle of the Books and involved teams of 4 students. There were 9 teams signed up for this spelling bee style contest which was held in May. The challenge was to read 56 books and be prepared to answer a series of questions that would test their knowledge of the books and authors.
When the contest was held, in the middle of May, there were only 3 teams left. Each of these teams won prize money for first, second and third place which was awarded at the May 19 assembly.
Our event this year took place on April 19th from 9:30 – 12:30. We hosted the event for families promoting good learning activities that are fun to do at home. Parents and children had a chance to visit stations in the gym with activities and also had a chance to meet with community vision and dental experts from Fort St. John.
The Science Fair was Wednesday, March 9. Student projects were set up first thing in the morning and judging began at 9am. Parents were welcome to come and see the science display boards in the afternoon, between 2:00 and 2:45pm. All classes in the school had a chance to see the displays throughout the afternoon.
The Science Fair was a success. There are many budding scientists at Prespatou School. Some of the winners went to the Regional Science Fair in April. The winning groups were: Gr. 4 – Henry Wolfe, Amos Janzen and Laura Wiebe, Diane Wall. Gr. 5 – Lynete Wiebe, Jennette Klassen. Gr. 6 – Dustin Unruh, Nathan Unruh and Kimberly Unruh, Gertruda Wolfe. Gr. 7 – Tracy Bergen, Amanda Dyck and Jeremy Wiebe, Matthew Wiebe.
The in town tournament was scheduled for March 10th and 11th at the Pomeroy Sports Center (Enerplex). The broomball tournament took place March 17th at the Pomeroy Sports Center.
The 2nd Dan Storey Memorial Broomball Tournament was held at Clearview school on Monday, March 14. This tournament is held in memory of Ms. Storey’s brother. It is sponsored by the Storey family and friends, to honour Dan and the things he valued including youth, education and sports. Thanks to Clearview school for donating their facilities.
District staff were at the school on March 8th at 7 pm to share information about the Kindergarten program for next year and to answer questions that parents had.
Thanks to the Prespatou community for their generous donations to the Jump Rope for Heart! This year the intermediate students met their goal of raising $6,000.00 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation! An official amount raised will be announced later. Fundraising prizes will be in sometime after spring break.
Friday, February 4th, was graduation day for Prespatou’s grade 12 students. As usual the gym was decorated beautifully, with a winter theme for the first time ever. The students chose the motto “Don’t Wait for the Storm to Pass … Learn to Dance in the Snow”. The ceremony was inspiring, with messages from Dave Sloan (Director of Instruction), Mike Sweetman (Secondary Teacher), Dave Ritchie (Principal) and class Valedictorian Eva Braun. The dinner was delectable and the dance later on was well attended. I think it’s safe to say a great time was had by all! I will try to get hold of some pictures and post them, so stay tuned.
We were very fortunate to have author Sigmund Brouwer visit our school for the morning on Monday, February 21st. We have over 60 of his books in our library. He did a presentation to the whole school and then worked with various intermediate and secondary students to promote reading and writing. The visit was a tremendous success! Students were able to purchase one of Sigmund’s books for $5 while he was here.
